Italian Line
| 14631 | Italian Line | (unknown) | 1970 | $42.99 | |
|
A pottery ashtray from the Italian Line. This example bears the "Finmare" logo in blue - ashtrays of identical design can be found with the earlier, crown logo - this logo design was among the last used on board Italia passenger vessels (1960's-1970's) and it is likely this piece was "liberated" from either T/n Michelangelo or T/n Raffaello. This example perfect, showing no chips, cracks, or crazing. |

| 15088 | Italian Line | (unknown) | 1970 | $44.99 | |
|
A small, pottery ashtray bearing the Finmare anchor logo. We have seen a number of these; however, this particular example has a distinctively cream-colored glaze, whereas all of the others which have passed through our hands have been a bright white. (This is, indeed, quite clearly the color of the glaze, and not any discoloration of the pottery.) Condition is excellent, with no crazing. There are a couple of small "bare" spots on the inner rim - these appear to be glaze flaws and not chips or damage. |

Mallory Line
| 15568 | Mallory Line | (unknown) | 1940 | $9.99 | |

Matson Lines
| 9944 | Matson Lines | (unknown) | 1960 | $24.00 | |
The rounded, tri-corner ashtray popular with many lines in the 1950's and 60's, and appearing for Matson with a variety of decals. This example has the pale green "Neptune" design, surrounded by the names: Monterey, Matsonia, Mariposa, and Lurline. We recently acquired three examples, all in very nice condition, but each with a bit of roughness at the outer edge of one of the cigarette rests. Attractive items! |

Moore-McCormack Lines
| 15718 | Moore-McCormack Lines | Argentina/Brasil | 1964 | $7.99 | |
|
A wonderful bit of advertising from Moore-McCormack! This is an unused book of matches, advertising the line's famous twins, s/s Argentina & s/s Brasil. An aerial photo of one of the sisters (Argentina) appears on the striker side, the flap features the Mooremack logo, and a route map appears within. Near pristine condition. A neat, 40 year old memento! |

A neat, souvenir ashtray from Brasil. This piece was produced in Switzerland, and is of aluminum with a hammered finish. A portrait of the vessel appears in relief at center. Nederland Line
| 11685 | Nederland Line | Oranje | 1939 | $150.00 | |
An absolutely wonderful and rare souvenir ashtray from Nederland Line's Oranje. We were especially delighted to come across this piece, particularly after our recent acquisition of another rare item from the Angelina Lauro. Plating excellent, even though the piece does show signs of use. (Condition is better than the image indicates - there is no "brassing" as the digital image appears to show). The repoussé image of the ship is nicely detailed, right down to her distinctive cargo cranes, and she looks quite a modern vessel even though rendered in her original configuration. Hallmarked, but other than the number 90, we are unable to decipher the marks. An uncommon and very attractive item! |

Newtex Steamship Corp.
| 15566 | Newtex Steamship Corp. | (unknown) | 1940 | $7.99 | |
|
A book of matches from the Newtex Line, which offered cargo service between New York, Houston, and Brownsville. The line's logo, as well as the image of a trio of vessels, is quite reminiscent of Moore-McCormack's advertising. The line's house flag is rectangular, divided in half horizontally - the top half dark blue, and the bottom, red. A single, white "N" appears at center. Two matches have been removed from this book, and the cover shows some chipping on one side only, at the crease. A neat, and certainly unusual item! |

Nitto Line
| 14018 | Nitto Line | (unknown) | 1960 | $60.00 | |
A simply decorated yet beautifully designed ashtray from Noritake for the Nitto Line. We knew nothing about this concern until we located some Noritake dinnerware backstamped with the line's name and flag, and Noritake were kind enough to provide us with confirmation. We were subsequently delighted when one of our vendors brought us this gem! Fine china decorated with a single, grey line. The piece is topmarked with the line's house flag, and "Nitto Line" appears on the side of the piece as well, albeit hidden by the large, flanged rim. Classic Japanese design - a beautiful piece of quality china. |

North German Lloyd
| 16495 | North German Lloyd | Bremen | 1930 | $119.99 | |
|
This is a very nice little souvenir ashtray featuring the colorful image of the Bremen that was applied to a myriad of different items, including perfume bottles, miniature steins, and demitasse cups. The ashtray is glazed pink pottery with a gold rim - a bit of the gilt lining is worn, but largely intact. The squared style is unquestionably Art Deco. The image itself exhibits only a tiny nick at the liner's bow. No cracks or chips. A very nice memento! |

An extremely nice example of a book of wooden matches from Bremen. Only a single match is missing, and a single scratch appears on the striker panel. Condition is excellent otherwise. The ship's Deco inspired portrait in black, white, and yellow on blue is quite "striking"! |

This is a magnificent ashtray from Noritake for the O.S.K. Line. The shape is distinctive, but is merely a variation of the "pillow" ashtray, developed for use on board steamships - especially on deck - where wind was a factor. We believe this pattern matched that of the line's First Class china service. Impeccable quality, and in perfect condition. |

Now, here is a fascinating and rare item! This is a wonderful cast and wrought iron stand holding a heavy ashtray which appears to be cast bronze or copper, with raised lettering in the bottom: "Panama Mail Spanish Americas Steamship Company". The stand features two cigar-sized holders on opposite sides of the ashtray. The cast iron base has a wonderful "petal" design, and the vertical wrought iron bar has a great spiral detail at the center. The piece stands over 31" high. Originally painted black, there is a light surface rust overall, but this truly adds to the charm of this one-of-a-kind item! |

States Marine - Isthmian Line
| 13408 | States Marine - Isthmian Line | (unknown) | 1970 | $40.00 | |
We were quite surprised and delighted to turn up this large, States Marine - Isthmian ashtray here in Dallas; not so because of the location, but because it actually features an image of the city! Touting "World Wide Services", one imagines they must have used modes of transportation other than sea-going vessels in order to reach Big D! The image of the city is quite detailed. The lettering spelling "Southland Life" is actually visible at the top of the Southland tower, and Mobil's Pegasus sits atop the Magnolia Building. The Dallas Convention Center Theatre (still extant) is in the foreground. This item, made of a white Melamine material and printed in maroon, is in mint condition. |

There appear to be two tiny nicks on the underside edge of the lid, but these could be factory flaws. Otherwise excellent condition, and an interesting piece! |

Swedish American Line
| 12061 | Swedish American Line | (unknown) | 1930 | $100.00 | |
Likely the original issue of the "pillow" style ashtray, this is the earliest form of decoration we have seen on these pieces. Manufactured for the line by Rörstrand, the ashtray features a very pale blue glaze, with the names of the line's three principal vessels and the three-crown logo in dark blue. In addition to the manufacturer's name, printed on the base is: "Swedish American Line - Gothenburg Direct - New York & Canada". Some minor crazing and one very tight vertical hairline almost dead center on the "Gripsholm" side. We photographed this side to illustrate how minor a flaw this actually is. Certainly forgivable on such an uncommon piece. |

| 12700 | Swedish American Line | (unknown) | 1930 | $55.00 | |
We believe this to be the earliest version of SAL's pillow-style ashtray. Clear glaze on light blue-grey china with dark blue under-glaze decoration. The names of the line's three principal vessels appear along the base. This example is a bit less-than-perfect, with a small rim chip, a base chip, and overall spider web crazing. Still, this early ashtray is quite rare when compared to the white and gold version which still appears in relative abundance. |

The famous Gustavsberg Pottery Company produced many lovely items for the Swedish American Line, both "Argenta" in green and "Lagun" in blue/brown glaze. Most commonly seen in blue are bud vases and pin trays, making this particular piece a bit unusual! This is a large, square ashtray featuring the 3-crown logo at center in silver overlay. Undoubtedly the heaviest piece we have seen, weighing in at just under two pounds! Condition is near-pristine. This item should appeal to Gustavsberg collectors as well, as it is undoubtedly a rare bird. |

United States Lines
| 11013 | United States Lines | United States | 1952 | $8.99 | |
An unused matchbook from the United States Lines, advertising the fleet mates SS America and SS United States, and promoting their service "To All Europe". A bow view portrait of "Big U" appears on both front and back covers, quite similar to that which appears on baggage tags of the period. The match heads are blue to "match" the ship's funnel tops. Once again, our diligent searching has turned up an entire, unopened, and unused box of 50 of these gems. Quite tightly packed, each shows very slight indication of wear at the point that it came into contact with its neighbors. Compare this early example to the later version listed below. Wonderful items! |
