Matthew |
 |
| Mr. Matthew developed his
model-making skills while working as a theatrical designer;
constructing complex, miniature and functioning replicas of stage
scenery. He has been a featured modeler at the Admiralty Marine
Model Gallery in Galveston, Texas where he created super-detailed 1:400
scale models of vessels such as Andrea Doria, Rotterdam
V, Texas Clipper (Excambion) and others. Between 2005-2009 he
served as Cruise Director for Norwegian Cruise Lines aboard the Pride
of Hawai'i, Pride of Aloha, Pride of America and
Norwegian Majesty. Today he devotes full time to designing
and building this unique series of large, accurately scaled replicas of classic
liners. top |

| The
Models |
 |
| Mr. Matthew chose to create this
unique series of waterline models as an homage to the craftsmen of
Arthur G. Henning's Art Model Studios. During the heyday of
liner travel, Henning's company not only built a large number of
travel agency models but also held contracts to maintain and
refurbish them. Mr. Matthew's techniques are
gleaned from information gathered during a number of restorations
he has performed on these vintage models. Each scale replica is
constructed in wood (hull & superstructure) with Baltic birch
or scribed basswood decking. Above-deck fittings are either diecast metal
or soldered brass, and the delicate railings are composed of
extremely fine copper wire
hand strung through photo etched brass stanchions. Mr. Matthew chose
this style of modeling as he feels that it brings a unique,
authentic and contemporary character to each vessel due to the
fact that similar models would have been built and displayed while the ship was
actually in service.
Mr. Matthew works in a scale of
1:200 (approximately 1/16" = 1'). At this scale most liners
will measure between 3'-4' in length, while large vessels such as Normandie,
Queen Mary or United States reach 5' (not including
base). Models are lighted from within and are available with a
traditional painted base or naturally finished hardwood. Dust
covers are frameless glass to permit a clear view of the vessel
from all angles. top |
 |
| Inventory |
 |
| Occasionally we will have completed
models in stock; however the majority of our models are created by
Mr. Matthew as one-of-a-kind works of art and are made to order.
Available models will be indicated as such on the model's page. top |

| Commissioning
a model |
 |
| Please call the number above or send an email to: models@cabinclass.com
and include your preferred contact information. Mr. Matthew will
contact you personally regarding your model. top |
 |
| Will
I be placed on a waiting list? |
 |
| No. Unlike other vendors that may
require multiple orders for a specific vessel prior to commencing
construction, Mr. Matthew specializes in unique models that are
often one-of-a-kind. Therefore there is no waiting list. top |
 |
| Restoration |
 |
| Mr. Matthew has refurbished a number
of vintage models and would be pleased to undertake your
restoration project. Restorations are performed at a rate of $20
per hour plus material costs. Original paint and fittings are
retained whenever possible and great care will be taken to
preserve the model's original patina and vintage appearance.
Please call or email models@cabinclass.com
for more information, and feel free to send along images of your
model. top |

 |
| Museum
Quality |
 |
| The much overused term "museum
quality" appears on many websites, few (if any) which offer
models to which the term might accurately be applied. Scale models
must meet a strict list of criteria governing materials, level of
detail, paint application and others in order to be properly
labeled "museum quality." Many models offered online, a
great number of which are mass produced overseas, can more aptly
be classified as "decorative facsimiles." Though often
photographed to their best advantage, close examination and
comparison to images of the actual vessel will often reveal major
inaccuracies, incorrect proportions and crudely over-scaled
details. True museum quality models are most often commissioned,
one-of-a-kind replicas that take many months or years to produce.
They rarely appear on the market and, when they do, command many
thousands of dollars. top |
 |
| Compare |
 |
| We encourage you to compare the
details and finish work of any of our illustrated models to those
offered by other online vendors. We are confident that you will be
unable to find any other large-scale replicas (with the exception
of vintage Art Model Studios models and those by
contemporary makers) that approach the accuracy, attention to
detail and beauty of one of Mr. Matthew's custom built models. We
strongly feel a model should be an investment as well as something
that can be confidently displayed and enjoyed. If pricing alone is
your concern, please contact us before you invest in an inferior,
crudely finished and anonymously built vessel. We would prefer to
work with you to insure you obtain a replica that you will be
proud to own. top |
