B & O

15881 B & O   1920   $24.99

The text of this neat promotional piece begins: "We are pleased to acknowledge your request for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad "Album of Washington Views," a copy of which is enclosed." We're sorry to say the album was not in the company of this piece, but perhaps for the best, as it highlights the wonderful and ephemeral nature of this "throw-away" item! The flyer promotes travel on the B & O to the Nation's capitol. Within are twelve photos, each in sepia tone. Six of the photos illustrate various stages of travel: the platform, ticket counter, baggage loading, and steamship connections at New York. The six remaining images are, perhaps, the most delightful. These illustrate various amenities: valet, barber, maid & manicure service, and the delights of the dining car. A very nice image of the B & O's "Capitol" logo appears alone, at center, on the final page. This 8½" x 11" four-page flyer has survived unfolded, and exhibits only a very narrow line of foxing along a portion of the lower edge. Should you happen to posses the "Album of Washington Views," this item would be a "must have"!

Canadian Pacific Railways

13107 Canadian Pacific Railways   1925   $35.00

On consignment: This is a marvelous example of ephemera from Canadian Pacific. We'll begin with the envelope in which these items were mailed, which bears the return address of CPR's Chicago offices on the flap. Within, we find a typed promotional letter addressed to a Mr. Rudolph C. Brandt of Evanston, Indiana, and signed by the line's general agent, Thomas J. Wall. The letterhead is priceless, and only an image can do it justice! As a bonus, included with this wonderful letter is a miniature poster, extremely colorful, featuring skiers and sled dogs in front of the famous Chateau Frontenac at Quebec. The reverse of this delightful piece advertises winter sports in the city. This item also bears the address of the Chicago agent, but is clearly marked: "Printed in Canada". These items, of course, have been folded; the only damage, however, is to the outer envelope, which has browned and curled at one end, but thankfully preserved its contents intact!

C & O - B & O

15972 C & O - B & O   1965   $16.99

An illustrated timetable for C & O - B & O passenger service; effective date: 31 October, 1965. This piece opens to a twelve page, stapled booklet, and is illustrated with color photographs. The highlight is a pair of large "twin" images of conductors, porters, and kitchen staff lined up beside the shining, stainless steel passenger cars of the B & O's "Capitol," and C & O's "George Washington." Light scuffing on the outer panel, else a nice example.

A timetable for joint passenger operations of the C & O and B & O Railroads; effective date: 24 April, 1966. Twelve pages, illustrated with color photos; the highlight of which is a group portrait of the engineers and service staff from a B & O train. The kitchen staff is holding food clearly plated on "Centenary" pattern china. Light scuffing on the outer panels, else a very nice example.

Chicago, Burlington & Quincy

13115 Chicago, Burlington & Quincy   1924   $28.00

On consignment: A neat little group of ephemera advertising Pacific Northwest vacations via Burlington, C, B & Q, Northern Pacific, and Great Northern railways. Included is a letter on Burlington Route letterhead, which also has the Burlington Route logo as its watermark. There are also two small booklets - one a fare schedule, and the other a promotional booklet for the north western United States. As these items were found tucked one inside the other, and as they are obviously related, we are offering them together.

15430 Chicago, Burlington & Quincy California Zephyr 1953   $14.99

A neat brochure for the California Zephyr, entitled "Vista Dome Views." This 16 page, timetable size booklet contains brief descriptions of notable sites, cities, and towns along the train's route, indicating the time of arrival for both eastbound and westbound trips, and whether or not the train stops at that particular location. This example seems to have been carried by a somewhat critical (or merely observant) passenger, who checked off each location and (in pencil) noted the actual time of arrival, which averaged between a half hour and an hour later than scheduled! A neat piece that certainly made the trip - a light crease upper left and minor wear at the spine - still a very good example.

Great Northern Railway

16219 Great Northern Railway   1954   $24.99

This is a very nice promotional brochure from the Great Northern, promoting travel on the "Western Star" to Glacier National Park. This timetable size piece opens to a full 25½" x 29¾". All text, graphics, and photos (25 of them) are on one side, while the reverse is entirely filled with a colorful map of the park, showing trails, roads, hotels, and the rail line. Condition is excellent overall, showing wear at only the very outermost fold intersection - still crisp with bright color. A very nice item.

Missouri Pacific

14120 Missouri Pacific  "The Eagle" 1947   $16.99

A delightful brochure advertising MoPac's "Route of the Eagles." The colorful cover illustration spans front & back panels. The interior features five photos, including an especially nice image of a dining car with a number of "State Flowers" service plates, and Hall China ashtrays on each table. Condition is near-perfect.

16124 Missouri Pacific   1955   $119.99

A delightful item from the Missouri Pacific - these puzzles were given to children to help pass the time during the trip. Difficult to find intact and in excellent condition. This example is both of those, and more. Featuring a portrait of ALCO-GE Diesel-Electric freight locomotive #309, as painted by noted railroad artist Howard Fogg, this puzzle is complete and in its original box. The box shows wear, soil, and a coffee ring, but the puzzle itself is in exceptionally fine condition - in fact, it did not appear to have ever been put together until we did it in order to photograph it and obtain the completed dimensions. The image was apparently cropped for the puzzle, effectively removing the artist's name. Fortunately, we were able to spot it in the small image that appears on the box lid. A very nice MoPac memento!

New York Air Brake Co.

16396 New York Air Brake Co.   1940   $129.99

A beautiful bronze medallion, struck to commemorate the New York Air Brake Company's 50th Anniversary. Produced by the Robbins Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts, a noted maker of military medals, pins, and badges of all types, this medallion is very nicely done, and features the image of a large, steam locomotive pulling a train of freight cars. This image appears above that of a stagecoach, with the legend: "New York Air Brakes of the Present - Brakes of the Past." The reverse bears the relief image of an actual air brake mechanism above the phrase: "Air Brakes Bring Surety and Swiftness." This example has developed a wonderful patina, and is in excellent condition. Quite an interesting and rather rare piece of railroad-related memorabilia.

New York Central

14127 New York Central   1947   $19.99

An interesting promotional brochure which catalogues all of the master works of art (reproductions, of course) which appeared on the trains of the New York Central. This would be an invaluable reference tool should one come across one of these works and need provenance! Fourteen of the works are illustrated within the brochure in black and white, while Renoir's "Lady at the Piano" appears on the front panel in color. Some mention of the printing methods employed in reproducing the original masterworks is made in the text, and brief biographies of a few of the most noted artists are included. An interesting item in excellent condition!

Union Pacific

13458 Union Pacific   1959   $89.99

A great set of six color photos issued by Union Pacific. The set includes three passenger trains and three freight. The passenger trains are as follows: City of Los Angeles in Weber Canyon, Utah; City of St. Louis in Cajon Pass; and the City of Portland in the Columbia River Gorge. The six photos came to us in their original UP envelope mailed from the company's Omaha headquarters. Though the envelope has some tattered edges, the photos have been wonderfully preserved with bright colors. A very nice set of images that would frame beautifully.

Western Pacific Railway

13459 Western Pacific Railway   1910   $120.00

A magnificent commemorative booklet from the Western Pacific Railway, featuring 25 tipped-in color plates. The tinted photos depict scenes along the railroad's "Feather River Cañon" route from Salt Lake to San Francisco. This memento is in wonderful condition. The edges of the cover show some wear, and there is a stain on the reverse which, thankfully, due to the heavy stock used, does not penetrate to the interior. Found (and left) tucked within the pages are a pair of postcards from Royal Gorge, probably acquired during the trip. This is a very nice example, with every image intact and undamaged with bright colors.
