| 13113 | Hamburg-America Line | (unknown) | 1907 | $80.00 | |
On consignment: The very collectible "Guide Through Europe", produced to be a complimentary gift to Hamburg-American Line passenger. When one views the 888 pages and sees how many of them are devoted to advertisements, one immediately realizes that the motives were purely commercial! This is an incredible archive of advertising from the first decade of the 20th Century included are several wonderfully illustrated, full color pull-outs - some quite large - featuring maps, views of attractions, and railway schedules. To say that this piece offers a wealth of information would fall well short of the mark! As there is no way to fully describe 888 pages in one paragraph, we can only add an image of the cover, which is wonderful on its own! |

| 16663 | Holland-America Line | Rotterdam | 1975 | $1,499.00 | |
|
This is a wonderful travel agent's display model of the SS Rotterdam. The 43½" model is cast styrene, and lights from within. The base measures 45¾" x 8", and is also composed of molded styrene. The model is in excellent condition, but came to us without her mast, funnels and kingposts. A number of her boats were missing as well. Missing parts were fabricated and the ship restored by noted model maker Ered Matthew. She appears in her midnight blue "Holland-America Cruises" livery. The ship is lit within by three 5 watt bulbs. She was undoubtedly manufactured in Europe as the electrical sockets accept European size bulbs. We were able to locate socket adapters, and have rewired the ship so she can be illuminated as originally intended (when found she had been stuffed with a string of white Christmas lights). Her replacement parts were fabricated with a bit more detail and accuracy than that of her original fittings, and Mr. Matthew chose to add rigging from bow to stern, which was not present originally, but certainly "completes" the vessel and creates a wonderful display model of this historic and much-loved ship. |

| 13395 | Holland-America Line | Statendam | 1939 | $24.00 | |
One of the last passenger lists from Statendam, as she would be laid up a mere four months later, and then lost to a German bombing raid during the War. Eastbound from New York, departing 13 July, 1939. This list includes Cabin Class, Tourist, and Third Class passengers. Excellent condition, showing only a couple of small stains on the cover - quite minimal as this light-colored stock is generally prone to soiling. A very nice memento from the famous Statendam. |

A special program, dated April 11, 1958, for a production presented by some of Statendam's passengers entitled "Gladiola Girl." A delightful program from Statendam, dated February 25, 1958. The evening's entertainment featured "Excerpts from Kismet". | 12516 | Holland-America Line | (unknown) | 1914 | $150.00 | |
It is doubtful we will be able to describe adequately this magnificent deck of cards from the Holland-America Line. We will begin by saying the deck consists of 52 cards, with no Jokers and no box. We then move to the card backs, which feature an elaborate design of fish and ropes surrounding a portrait of the Statendam - but look again! The portrait featured is that of the Statendam of 1914, a vessel which was destined, because of the war, never to enter service as a Holland-America Line ship. We'll look now at the face cards, incredibly and beautifully illustrated; each suit dramatically different and amazingly colorful. The aces are fully illustrated as well, each featuring two castles placed as if to mirror one another, though they are all representative of actual structures and are quite different. We would not be surprised to find that the figures of royalty illustrated on the face cards are actual historical figures. Doubtless an expert in heraldry could enlighten us on this point. The cards do show some soil and signs of use but have remained quite flat, and none is physically damaged. |

We are continually amazed at the number of Holland-America hangers which turn up! We do occasionally see examples from other lines, but those from HAL are not only the most numerous, but the most varied in style as well. This is a simple heavy wooden hanger with a dowel cross-bar. The line name is printed twice in black, but only on one side. I was just now surprised to find a faint impressed mark which appears to say: Nagel Coat Hanger Co., Houston, Tex.! |

| Italian Line | Michelangelo/ Raffaello |
1970 | |||
This is a marvelous promo from Italia. We acquired the original 16mm film some time ago, and have had it transferred to video. Titled: "The Crossing", the film depicts daily life during a typical transatlantic voyage on board one of the sisters. Though professional models may have been used for a few of the shots, the bulk of the piece appears to use actual passengers. One of the film's highlights is a dramatic segment shot from the deck as the ships passed each other, quite closely (those gutsy Italians!) at full speed. Entirely in color with sound, run time is just over 24 minutes. We are truly delighted to have been able to preserve this great Italian Line film! Available in standard and PAL format. |

This is a great, mail-in questionnaire distributed to passengers, most likely at the beginning of what the line hoped would be a pleasant crossing! The piece is cleverly folded, and contains 6 black & white photos of the chief vessels in the Italia passenger fleet. Though Michelangelo & Raffaello are present, the Colombo and Da Vinci are pictured in their original hull coloring. The questionnaire is printed in both Italian & English. Dimensions when opened are 16" x 9¾", which does not include an additional center map panel of the line's routes which folds upward adding another 3¾". Though not an early item, still one of the most interesting pieces of Italia ephemera we have seen in a while. |
