St. Joseph - Chicago Steamship Co.
| 13291 | St. Joseph - Chicago Steamship Co. | Eastland | 1915 | $17.99 | |
A post-disaster card, postmarked at Chicago on 15 August, just three weeks following the disaster. The writer notes, somewhat coldly: 'The "Favorite" finished raising this boat yesterday. I saw her just now. She is not so much the worse for her bath.' The stamp has been removed from this example, otherwise very nice condition. |
States Marine Lines
| 11315 | States Marine Lines | Savannah | 1962 | $6.99 | |
A color photo card of Savannah leaving her home port for her maiden voyage on 20 August, 1962. An unused card in excellent condition. |
Sun Line
| 11494 | Sun Line | Stella Maris | 1965 | $4.99 | |
An unused card from the Stella Maris. The ship appears at sea in this artist's rendering. Very near mint condition. |
| 10660 | Sun Line | Stella Solaris | 1968 | $3.99 | |
A color illustration of the Stella Solaris. This is the vessel that preceded the former "Cambodge," which underwent a major conversion and became the last Stella Solaris circa 1973. |
Swedish American Line
| 16519 | Swedish American Line | Drottingholm | 1920 | $11.99 | |
A rare card from SAL's Drottingholm, circa 1920. This example is not postally used. This is certainly a plus, as it is printed on unusually lightweight stock, and one cannot imagine many of these surviving the post without damage. There is a corner crease at upper left, and a thumb crease at top, just right of center. Both of these are extremely faint and do not detract. |
| 16516 | Swedish American Line | Kungsholm/Gripsholm | 1932 | $12.99 | |
An artist's rendering depicting the Kungsholm and Gripsholm of the Swedish American Line. This line-issued card was printed in Sweden, and was never written on or postally used. Very faint hint of a corner crease lower left, otherwise very nice condition. |
| 10675 | Swedish American Line | Stockholm | 1948 | $24.00 | |
A truly wonderful starboard 1/2 view real photo of Stockholm at sea. A card we had not seen before - unused and in mint condition. |
| 11917 | Swedish American Line | Stockholm | 1948 | $24.00 | |
One of the loveliest images of Stockholm we have seen. This continental sized card shows Stockholm leaving port. The image is in color, and the tones are warm and subtle, giving one the impression of an aquatint. Unused, with very slight edge wear. A beautiful card showing the ship as she appeared when entering service.! |
| 15935 | Swedish American Line | Stockholm | 1948 | $24.99 | |
A very early card from the Stockholm. This image is one we had not seen previously, and is an artist's depiction of the new vessel at sea. The printing date is May of 1947 - some months prior to her maiden voyage. The card bears a Goteborg cancel. The date is 7 July, and though the year is not legible, it is almost certainly 1948. Exhibiting some minor corner wear, but very clean. A rare, line-issued card from the famous Stockholm. |
| 10678 | Swedish American Line | Stockholm | 1950 | $7.99 | |
A tinted illustration probably based on a photo. Starboard broadside as she originally looked - before her superstructure was extended (and her bow replaced!). The postmark is hard to read, but we will guess 11/27/50. There is a thumb crease along the top edge, which has been a bit exaggerated in the scan. |
| 15057 | Swedish American Line | Stockholm | 1955 | $14.99 | |
A postcard from the Stockholm, postmarked at Goteborg on March 25, 1955. The ship is illustrated, in this tinted photo, as she passes lower Manhattan, outbound from her pier. Though dated just over one year prior to her collision with the Andrea Doria, the image shows the ship as she appeared prior to her 1952 refit, which extended her Promenade Deck superstructure aft. This card is in very good condition, showing minor edge and corner wear, and a small portion of the cancel on the face. Artists seemed fond of illustrating the all-white vessel in a misty, ghost-like manner. This, of course, was somewhat prophetic, as it is exactly how she must have appeared as she emerged from the fog on that July evening in 1956! |
Swedish Lloyd Line
| 16523 | Swedish Lloyd Line | Suecia & Britannia | 1918 | $14.99 | |
An uncommon card from the Swedish Lloyd Line, depicting one of a pair vessels that served the London-Gothenburg route: the Suecia and the Britannia. The card is unused, and exhibits only a light corner crease at upper right, and some minor corner and edge wear. Very clean both front and back. |
Union-Castle Line
| 15044 | Union-Castle Line | Athlone Castle | 1936 | $9.99 | |
A beautiful portrait of the Athlone Castle of the Union-Castle line. Union Castle faithfully photographed their new liners, and produced similar cards for each. This example is unused and in excellent condition, bearing only the stamp of a Cape Town postcard collector on the reverse. |
| 15054 | Union-Castle Line | Braemar Castle | 1952 | $9.99 | |
A Union-Castle Line portrait of the Braemar Castle on this unused card. Very nice condition, with excellent corners. A small label bearing the name and address of a Capetown postcard collector has been applied to the reverse of this card. A bit of rubber cement thinner would undoubtedly lift this without damaging the card. However, we have left it in place, as it confirms the card's presence in one of the ship's chief ports. |
| 15049 | Union-Castle Line | Capetown Castle | 1938 | $9.99 | |
Another from a series of line-issued portrait cards, this for the Capetown Castle. Unused; postcard collector's stamp on reverse. |
| 15048 | Union-Castle Line | Carnarvon Castle | 1938 | $9.99 | |
A nice card from the Carnarvon Castle, showing her as she appeared following her 1937/1938 Harland & Wolff refit, which eliminated her forward funnel. Unused condition; very nice! |
| 15053 | Union-Castle Line | Edinburgh Castle | 1948 | $9.99 | |
Another wonderful Union-Castle Line card from the Cornish collection - this example the turbine steamer Edinburgh Castle. Not postally used, but bearing a collector's stamp on the reverse. A nice example. |
| 15047 | Union-Castle Line | Warwick Castle | 1932 | $9.99 | |
A nice portrait of an attractive vessel. This Harland & Wolff built ship would enjoy an abbreviated career, courtesy of a torpedo from U 413. She would take 63 souls to the bottom with her, off Portugal, on 14 November, 1942. This unused card is in excellent condition. Stamped on the reverse by a Cape Town collector - one of the card's previous owners. |
United American Lines
| 10688 | United American Lines | Cleveland | 1909 | $11.99 | |
An uncommon card from the Cleveland. A vertical format illustration done in sepia tones. This example is unused and in excellent condition, with only a slight corner bend. A nice card. |
United States Lines
| 10692 | United States Lines | America | 1919 | $14.00 | |
This is a wonderful card from America, while she was being operated by the United States Lines for the US Shipping Board. Unused and in excellent condition, this is a vertical format card with a black & white illustration of the ship's lounge, complete with simulated handwriting describing the scene. Very minor creasing, quite imperceptible, in the lower border section. This does not extend into the image. |
| 10693 | United States Lines | America | 1921 | $12.00 | |
A wonderful interior photo of America's Smoking Room. This is a vertical format card which features a description of the image at bottom in simulated "handwriting". This style of card appeared in the early 1920's, while United States Lines was an operator for the US Shipping Board. Unused, and in excellent condition. |
| 16626 | United States Lines | America | 1940 | $16.99 | |
Fred Hoertz's portrait of America at sea. We believe the original painting to have been executed while the vessel was under construction. This particular example is unused and in very nice condition. |
| 13467 | United States Lines | George Washington | 1923 | $19.99 | |
A very nice portrait of "Big George" passing the Statue of Liberty, rendered in the inimitable style of maritime artist Willy Stower. Bearing a U.S. Sea Post cancel dated April 21, 1923. Some corner wear and a small corner crease lower left, otherwise a very nice example with great color! |
| 14934 | United States Lines | Leviathan | 1918 | $18.99 | |
Another from the wonderful series of postcards issued for Leviathan while she was operating as "USS Leviathan" during WWI. This is a dramatic image of high seas breaking over the ship's forecastle. Every available open space on her decks was packed with life rafts and extra boats, as is very much in evidence in this photo. Quite likely, these cards were available to the soldiers on board. This example has not been written on or posted, and shows only some minor corner wear. Wonderful! |
| 14933 | United States Lines | Leviathan | 1918 | $17.99 | |
A wonderful photo card from a series issued of Leviathan while trooping. This image was taken from the ship's mainmast, looking down at her stern. One can easily see that she is making good speed! Her aft deck is packed with life rafts and extra boats, all needed to accommodate the thousands she would carry. The card is not postally used, and shows only some minor corner wear. |
| 16518 | United States Lines | Leviathan | 1929 | $11.99 | |
This postcard features an artist's rendering of Leviathan, but is finished with a photo-like gloss. Not postally used, and apparently saved as a souvenir - someone has written "Tour of England & France" along the top margin. Bumped corners and light soiling on the reverse - still a good example and a nice image of the vessel. |
| 10721 | United States Lines | Manhattan | 1932 | $21.99 | |
A beautiful early card from Manhattan, as she is described as: "The World's Newest Luxury Liner" on reverse. Her tonnage and passenger-carrying capacity is also indicated. This apparently is an "artist's conception" of the vessel, or a highly retouched photo. Very near mint. |
| 16524 | United States Lines | Manhattan | 1933 | $9.99 | |
This colorful postcard from the Manhattan features a textured finish. Unused and in very good condition, exhibiting only some diagonal marks at the corners from scrap book hinges. Sharp corners. |
| 10724 | United States Lines | Manhattan | 1941 | $29.99 | |
A great real photo of the stranded Manhattan, "High and Dry.....", and quite embarrassed with her neutrality markings emblazoned on her starboard flank. A wonderful photo signed and dated on the negative. Unused, rare, and excellent! |
| 16623 | United States Lines | Manhattan | 1941 | $18.99 | |
A rare image of the U.S. Lines vessel Manhattan run aground of Palm Beach, Florida, image recorded on January 13, 1941. This is not a real photo card, and though it features a photographic image it has a matte finish. The card bears a February 18 cancel. Some corner creasing upper right, and cancel markings on the face. Still a neat card in very good condition overall. |
| 10725 | United States Lines | President Garfield | 1921 | $17.99 | |
This is a very interesting card from the United States Lines. A vertical format interior view of the library aboard President Garfield. The ship sailed under this name only briefly, so this unused card can be quite accurately dated. Of interest is the printed "hand written" notation in the bottom border, describing the amenities of a "522" ship. A bump to the lower left corner, otherwise very nice. |
| 10726 | United States Lines | President Garfield | 1921 | $11.99 | |
Another of the interesting series of vertical format interiors from the US Lines, published in the early 1920's while the line was operator for the US Shipping Board. This example was issued for use "On board President Garfield". The black & white image is a shot of the Dining Saloon aboard a typical "522" ship - not known if it is actually the Garfield, herself. Unused and quite clean, with just a bit of corner wear. |
| 14940 | United States Lines | President Harding | 1938 | $14.99 | |
A wonderful, textured, color card from the Harding, which illustrates the vessel as she passes (outbound) the Ambrose Light Ship. This card bears the ship's own cancel, dated July of 1938 (the number of the specific day is not legible). The card shows faint impressions from a postcard album at the corners, but is otherwise in very nice condition, with good color. Though the ship appears quite modern in the image, she was, in fact, quite near the end of her career, and would be bombed and sent to the bottom in less than two years. |
| 10731 | United States Lines | Republic | 1924 | $15.99 | |
A somewhat 'cramped' stateroom - not what I would choose for publicity! Vertical format and unused, with yet another version of the line's logo on reverse! Very good condition for this unusual card. |
| 10733 | United States Lines | Republic | 1931 | $14.00 | |
A very interesting card from Republic. This is an oversized real photo of the ship, and her four masts indicate that it was recorded following her 1927 refit. Not postally used, however dates and times are recorded on the reverse: "Wed. 3:00 o'clock November 4th to Tues. 3:00 o'clock November 10th". We assume this refers to embarkation and debarkation, and the fact that the day of the week was recorded allows us to calculate the year - 1931. The ship was no longer making commercial voyages at that time, but had been taken over as a troop transport by the government. |
| 10737 | United States Lines | United States | 1952 | $6.99 | |
This illustration of the United States seems to have an exaggerated appearance, her forward superstructure a bit too lofty. Still a dramatic rendering of the ship at sea. This unused example is in excellent condition. |
| 10739 | United States Lines | United States | 1952 | $24.00 | |
A wonderful advertising card from "Big U" - this example indicating that the vessel was equipped with "Chicago Spring Hinges". The image is Aylward's well-known portrait. Interestingly, the reverse is printed upside-down. Unused with excellent corners. |
| 11955 | United States Lines | United States | 1952 | $8.99 | |
The dramatic color rendering of SS United States at sea appears on the face of this unused card, naming the ship "World's Fastest Liner" in the lower border. Descriptive text printed on reverse describing the vessel's record-breaking maiden voyage. Condition is excellent with sharp corners. |
| 11962 | United States Lines | United States | 1952 | $9.99 | |
A favorite portrait of "Big U" at sea. This card appears printed on various types of stock; mat; glossy; and as is this example, textured. Unused with very bright colors. Extremely minor corner wear on this example. |
| 11943 | United States Lines | United States | 1952 | $16.99 | |
As real photos of SS United States go, this is one of our favorites. The ship appears brand new in this black and white image, belching black smoke from her aft funnel. Published by A. Mainzer of New York. Unused and in excellent condition. |
| 16525 | United States Lines | various | 1941 | $9.99 | |
We believe this card to be an artist's depiction of the vessels laid down for the United States Lines in the early 1940's, but subsequently converted for use as troop transports in WW II. The reverse lists the American Merchant, American Banker, American Trader, and the American Farmer for London service, and the American Shipper and American Importer for Cobh, Belfast, and Liverpool service. Not postally used, exhibiting some light corner wear and a bump at upper left. |
| 16510 | United States Lines | Washington | 1933 | $12.99 | |
A colorful artist's depiction of the Washington on this unused postcard. The stock is textured, and the card is very crisp and in excellent condition - just the faintest hint of wear to the lower right corner. |
Unterweser Steamship Co.
| 14913 | Unterweser Reederei A.G. | Bockenhein | 1930 | $11.99 | |
A nice, real photo of the SS Bockenhein of the Unterweser Reederei Aktien Gessellschaft. The ship is shown at Corpus Christi, Texas. We have estimated the date, as there is no indication either printed or written on the card, and it has not been posted. The card has a matte finish, and with the exception of a tiny bump lower right, is in excellent condition. |
Various
| 12996 | Various | (various) | 1962 | $8.99 | |
A wonderful card featuring the "Ships of Southampton"; Canberra, Windsor Castle, QE2, Thoresen's Viking, and the Ro-Ro ferries Leopard and Dragon. The upper deck configuration of the QE2 indicates the photo was taken very early in her career. Unused with just a bit of corner wear. |
| 15599 | Various | (various) | 1963 | $16.99 | |
An incredible view of Luxury Line Row on this wonderful color photo card, posted at New York. The cancel is a bit difficult to read, but it appears to be July 17, 1963. Visible are Independence, America, United States, Olympia, the aircraft carrier Intrepid, Mauretania, Sylvania, and The Queen Elizabeth, being eased towards her berth. An historic photo, to say the least! Excellent condition. The only flaw, if you care to call it that, is a stamp which has been folded around onto the face - this hardly detracts from this wonderful card! |
White Star Line
| 16534 | White Star Line | Baltic | 1906 | $14.99 | |
A starboard broadside portrait of Baltic at sea on this unused postcard. This card was issued as part of a series of liner cards, Baltic being No. 61. Quite crisp with no fading, just a couple of nicks to the lower corners. |
Wisconsin & Michigan Steamship Co.
| 10825 | Wisconsin & Michigan Steamship Co. | Milwaukee Clipper | 1968 | $6.99 | |
This is a nice full color photo card of the Clipper plying her route between Muskegon and Milwaukee. Unused, showing only very minor corner wear and a light smudge on reverse - a nice example from this famous vessel! |
| 13015 | Wisconsin & Michigan Steamship Co. | Milwaukee Clipper | 1968 | $8.99 | |
A great card from the Clipper. This example was postmarked at Muskegon on July 18, 1968. Though postally used, the card is in extremely nice condition, and shows absolute minimal signs of wear at the corners. Very nice! |
| 15163 | Wisconsin & Michigan Steamship Co. | Milwaukee Clipper | 1968 | $9.99 | |
A nice, color photo of the Clipper as she arrives at port. The Great Lakes aficionado might recognize the lighthouse marking the channel. This example is unused, showing very minor corner wear, and some very light soiling on the reverse. |
| 15613 | Wisconsin & Michigan Steamship Co. | Milwaukee Clipper | 1968 | $10.99 | |
A great color photo of the famous Clipper, under way on Lake Michigan, traveling between Muskegon and Milwaukee. Not postally used, and showing only extremely minor corner wear. A very nice example! |
| 15162 | Wisconsin & Michigan Steamship Co. | Milwaukee Clipper | 1978 | $9.99 | |
A great photo of the Clipper in her green livery, which some feel suited her better than grey. Unused, and showing minor wear to the lower corners. A nice portrait of the former Juniata. |
