Royal Holland Lloyd
| 9889 | Royal Holland Lloyd | Orania | 1910 | $65.00 | |
This is a beautiful and rare piece - an embroidered handkerchief featuring a beautiful portrait of the Orania from the Royal Holland Lloyd. This piece is in exquisite condition. There are a couple of very small and very faint stains, which might well disappear with cleaning. However, as the overall condition is excellent, we have not attempted to do this. The vessel herself is quite lovely - white hull with blue boot topping, brown superstructure, and gold & black funnels. At least seven different colors have been used to render the ship's image, and this is certainly one of the most charming examples we have seen - and the first from "Lloyd Royal Hollandais"! |

Royal Mail Line
| 8710 | Royal Mail Line | Orca | 1923 | $175.00 | |
An incredibly beautiful silver powder or snuff box from the Orca, a ship which flew the Royal Mail flag for a short time, and went on to sail for White Star as the Calgaric. This piece bears a beautiful enameled crest, and is in magnificent condition. Though not hallmarked, we believe the piece to be sterling. A rare item. |

Royal Navy
| 12537 | Royal Navy | HMS Renown | 1900 | $95.00 | |
A wonderful souvenir ribbon plate bearing an image of a naval vessel which we believe to be the HMS Renown of the late 1800's. At the time of listing we had acquired a second example of this plate, accompanied by a companion piece picturing Cunard's Campania. The Renown would have been her contemporary. The plate is in excellent condition. |

Swedish American Line
| 13368 | Swedish American Line | Kungsholm | 1929 | $50.00 | |
An elaborately decorated souvenir pocket knife from the Kungsholm. The ship's portrait appears on one side of the case, flanked by Nordic serpentine designs. The reverse features a woman in native costume. The steel case has been accented with gilt detailing. Both blades show significant wear in the form of rough edges, but have not been ground down and have not rusted. Opposite the blades is a long file tool. The tang of the larger blade is marked: Emil Olson; the smaller blade has the number "17." The ship's portrait, though tiny, is quite detailed, and her name appears in the waves below her. Though certainly well-used, a rare and extremely nice memento from the famous Kungsholm. |

| 12363 | Swedish American Line | (unknown) | 1941 | $285.00 | |
A truly lovely set of fruit plates from SAL. These plates were used on board and were also available as a complete set of six in the ship's gift shop. These examples feature a scalloped edge with a gold rim and herringbone design. The transfers - each different - feature a sailing vessel representative of the type of craft in use during each of six centuries. Beginning with a ninth century Viking vessel, we see also ships from the thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries. One finds the same transfers on more modern, square-shaped plates; however these are of earlier vintage. Manufactured for the line by Rörstrand and fully backstamped as made especially for SAL, with a 1941 date code. The condition of these examples is near-mint. One might find a tiny hint of nesting wear on one or two of the plates, otherwise they are immaculate, with gold rim decoration intact. By the way, the original cost of a complete set of six, (per a 1958 passenger list): $9.75! |

| NEW! |
Just when we think we've spotted all of the variations of Lagun art pottery crafted by Gustavsberg for the Swedish American Line, another item surfaces! This is a charming little piece - a bit too large to be a toothpick holder, its intended use (if any) remains unknown. The line's three crown crest is applied in silver overlay that can be polished to a bright shine, if desired. This example is in excellent condition, exhibiting only a couple of very tiny scratches or pin-point bumps at the extreme corners. The bottom-most crown shows evidence of either just a bit of wear or a small flaw in its application along the lower rim - inconsequential. The original paper label on the base has survived intact. A lovely piece of art pottery from a gift shop on board one of the line's famous and popular vessels. |

|
We were absolutely delighted to locate this wonderful piece - a vinyl tote bag from the Swedish American Line. Airline flight bags are quite collectible, so this unusual item must indeed be considered a gem! Dark blue vinyl with pale yellow piping. The line name appears on both sides, accompanied by the three-crown crest. A single chrome button on the strap bears the name "Garlo," and we assume this is the manufacturer's name. Excellent quality with all metal fittings and zipper, which functions perfectly and exhibits no wear. The vinyl is quite supple and exhibits no cracking, and all stitching is intact on both the bag and strap. One side of the bag features a reinforced outer pocket. Some very minor scratching from use; an unusual item that remains functional! |

| 10987 | Swedish American Line | (unknown) | 1965 | $150.00 | |
This is a wonderful set of fruit plates, each marked on reverse: "Specially Designed For The Swedish American Line". The manufacturer is Rörstrand of Sweden. These plates can be seen in brochure photographs of gift shops on board SAL vessels, and they were also used in on-board service. Each plate bears a different grey scale image of an early sailing vessel, each with SAL's three-crown logo on a sail, and dated 1000, 1400, 1500, 1600, and 1700. The original set, as purchased in the gift shops, consisted of six plates, and the 1800 plate is missing from this group. |

| 14180 | Swedish American Line | (unknown) | 1982 | $79.99 | |
|
This magnificent bowl seems a bit of a mystery. The Rörstrand date code appears to indicate that it was manufactured in 1982, however the piece bears the unmistakable decoration used in the dining rooms of Swedish American Line vessels from the 1930's until the line ceased passenger service in 1975. It is quite possible that this may have been a special presentation piece for a company VIP. The image is one of the series of six used to decorate fruit plates; used not only in the dining rooms of SAL vessels, but sold in the on-board shops as well, due to their popularity. Each image depicts a sailing vessel from a different century - this being a square-rigger from the 18th Century. She flies the SAL house flag at her stern, and the three-crown logo of the line appears on her largest sail as well. The bowl is a rounded octagon, and has a raised rope design at the rim, and a gold line on the edge. Condition is extremely fine, with no evidence use or wear. |

| 12429 | United States Lines | Leviathan | 1925 | $300.00 | |
Few examples of ocean liner memorabilia from the first half of the 20th Century can be considered common, but there are some which can indeed be labeled extremely rare - we believe this item falls into this category. This is a marvelous Art Deco compact decorated in red and black enamel. Impressed into the enamel, and highlighted in metallic gold is "Club Leviathan". Club Leviathan was the Deco nightclub which emerged in the midst of the Roaring Twenties from the former Vaterland's Palm Court. One can almost imagine a bead-bedecked flapper being presented with this trinket for winning a Charleston contest! The compact itself is of exceptional quality, though no manufacturer is indicated. A patent number does appear, but we have not been able to trace it. A hinged mirror separates two compartments in which the original powder, rouge, and powder puffs remain. A couple of small nicks in the enamel on top, and a few scratches on the reverse. This piece was owned by a woman who made transatlantic crossings annually in the 1920's and 1930's. An amazing piece which truly evokes the spirit of a lost era! |

| 16243 | United States Lines | United States | 1952 | $24.99 | |
|
Sought-after due to the wonderful portrait of the SS United States, which appears on both front and back cover panels, this needle pack bears a 1952 copyright, held by the Pioneer Merchandise Co. of New York. The item, however, appears to have been manufactured in Japan and imported. With needle threader and approximately 75% of its original needles intact, perhaps the most impressive feature of this particular example is the exceptional condition of the covers, which are crisp and bright, and exhibit no soil, folds, or creases, and appear near-to-new. A very nice example. |

| 13931 | United States Lines | (unknown) | 1965 | $250.00 | |
A very unusual and beautiful set of souvenir plates, more than likely acquired in the gift shop aboard SS United States. Based on the well-known "grey star" pattern, each plate in the set of four has had a gilt rim added. A decal featuring an image of a sailing vessel at sea (each different) has been applied, and the surrounding sea and sky have been hand painted so as to fill the entire well of the plate. As the work is obviously hand-done, we considered whether or not these could have been a home project, however the fact that each plate bears an identical date code and shows absolutely no signs of use indicates that these were especially intended for the decoration applied. Quite lovely, rare, and in excellent condition. |

United States Lines (American Classic Voyages)
| 14027 | United States Lines (ACV) | (unknown) | 2000 | $24.00 | |
This is a neat and very colorful souvenir from the United States Lines, most likely acquired on board MV Patriot during an Hawaiian cruise. As indicated on the reverse, the bird depicted is an Hawaiian Honeycreeper. There is a pocket-shaped opening on the reverse so you may insert your tropical orchids! Indicated as a "Limited Edition," it is not known how many of these were produced. There is one, small rough spot on the surface, which is not obvious; else excellent. |

United States Navy
| 12406 | United States Navy | USS Seattle | 1916 | $25.00 | |
Though we have always hesitated to expand deeply into the realm of naval vessels, it is occasionally difficult to pass up items of quality, as is this example. A wonderful silk handkerchief in near-pristine condition, featuring a printed portrait of the armored cruiser, USS Seattle. This Tennessee Class vessel was christened USS Washington at her launch, but was renamed in 1916. One suspects this was a mother's gift from a son, and likely a treasured memento. |

Another example of this wonderful, and somewhat mysterious cup and saucer. The twin-funneled liner has "Corpus Christi - Brazil" written on her bow. The colorful and detailed transfer appears on both the cup and saucer, (which are full size, and not demitasse), and the cup has an added bonus of a delightful little tug boat which appears on the reverse. Quite a bit of wear to the gold edge on this example, however the transfers are in excellent condition, and the piece still displays wonderfully. |

Various
| 12422 | Various | various | 1957 | $30.00 | |
This is a very interesting little booklet entitled "Portfolio of Famous Ships". This booklet was distributed by Liebmann Breweries, the makers of Rheingold Beer. Apparently the booklet was produced in conjunction with an exhibit at Pier 81 in New York, held in honor of the Mayflower II in the summer of 1957. The booklet begins with an illustration of the City of Manchester, the vessel in which Samuel Liebmann emigrated to the US in the mid-1800's. Following this, there is a photo and brief description of a major liner on each page, beginning with SS United States, RMS Queen Elizabeth, MS Gripsholm, SS Independence, SS Ryndam, TV Cristoforo Colombo, MV Britannic, QTEV Queen of Bermuda, SS Santa Paula, and MS Bergensfjord. The final page features a photo of the Mayflower II. Quite interestingly, the cover states that models of these ships were featured at the exhibit - one wonders where these are now! A neat bit of ephemera. |

A great tin, possibly from Benson's, which features a colorful illustration of the Royal Yacht Britannia on the lid. The side panels are decorated with images of famous liners: the Empress of Canada at Liverpool, RMS Queen Elizabeth at Southampton, Canberra sailing past Table Mountain, and the SS America at New York. The tin is in excellent condition, showing only some minor scratches. No dents or dings. Undoubtedly of British manufacture, though no maker is identified on the piece itself. An unusual example for your steamship tin collection! |

White Star Line
| 13216 | White Star Line | Arabic | 1906 | $500.00 | |
We are extremely pleased to be able to offer to you this very rare Cadbury chocolate tin from White Star. We occasionally see the same tin lithographed with the image of Mauretania for Cunard, but rarely is the White Star version found. The ship illustrated is one of the "Big Four", however we were delighted to discover on this example that long ago someone had lightly scratched "SS Arabic" beneath the lid! The White Star flag appears at upper left, and beneath the ship is the legend: "White Star Line Royal Mail Steamers". Intended for use as a match safe, the reverse has a striker between the words "Cadbury" and "Bournville". Very minor scratching to the image - this item is not only rare, but is in very nice condition! |
