white star brownfield pattern item detail
Pattern description: This pattern is the brown enameled version of the famous turquoise pattern from White Star, illustrated as pattern number 3 in the archive. The two are identical with the exception of the hand-applied enamel on the "tongues." The "hearts and tendrils," as well as the flag outline and banner, are mid-to-light brown, and the edge is lined in gold.
Pattern notes: Two registration numbers appear on the reverse of this item. 117214, which indicates a date of 1889; and 324028, which indicates a date of 1898, which, of course, would be the earliest date this piece could have been manufactured. A significant number of examples of White Star china in this pattern have been discovered in southern Europe, and it is believed by some that this pattern may have been used chiefly by vessels engaged in the Mediterranean service, while the turquoise version was confined to the better-known transatlantic liners.
