white star line item detail
Pattern description: This is likely the most famous of all the known White Star Line patterns. Basically an Art Nouveau design with hand applied enameling in turquoise blue. The "hearts, tongues and tendrils" are brown (the reproductions produced for Cameron's Titanic used gold for these designs). Gold appears only lining the edge of the rim on original items. The center logo, which consists of the line's house flag with name on a banner below, is red and brown. Though indeed used on board Titanic, this pattern appeared earlier, well before Titanic's construction and launch, and was used in First Class on other White Star passenger vessels. The pattern registry numbers which appear on our (temporarily) demi cup and saucer are: 117214 (1889) and 324028 (1898).  Recently (10/02) offered at eBay, a pair of A.D. cups and saucers with the personal burgee of the owner of an Australian yacht (Stormy Petrel) replacing the WSL house flag, but otherwise identical.
Pattern notes: See pattern number 12 below for the brown enameled version of this china.
