| Pattern description:
The upper body and interior of this cup have a pale ivory tint, the lower
half in grey with a embossed design of overlapping bands and "fish
scales". The line logo appears in gold, and a gold line is applied at
the rim, as well as at the "break" in the cup's form, between
the ivory and the grey. Other items (saucers, plates) appear with an
ivory well, grey rim, and with or without the gold decoration. Pattern notes: Karl Spence describes a nearly identical pattern (RV1) as being white with a Wedgwood blue band. In just the right light, the grey on the item illustrated could appear to have a bluish tint, but as Karl's image is in black and white, we are unable to make a direct comparison to determine whether or not this is the same pattern. We have also noted a photo in Restaurant China, Vol. 1 a photo of a cup with the embossed lower half glazed pink, so we now must wonder how many colors were used. Though there is a distinct resemblance between this logo, and the "B" logo of Bowater S.S. Co., we are grateful for correspondence received from a former Royal Viking Line employee, stating that there was no connection between the two. The RVL logo was apparently developed circa 1970, the image being based on that of a crimson eagle from Viking mythology.
