cunard item detail
Pattern description: An incredible piece of Cunard "Ivory Ware" china, possibly intended for the children's playroom (First Class, of course!) on board RMS Queen Mary. It we be a bit presumptuous to name this pattern "Little Miss Muffet", as we have been, so far, unable to establish whether or not any other nursery rhyme characters appeared on this china**. Produced by Foley; the black, orange, and grey lines appear on the saucer only. The cup is not full-size, but is a bit larger than the A.D. cups which appear in this pattern. We have attributed the artwork to George Ramon, the artist who's murals decorated the playroom, and exhibit a marked similarity to that which decorates these to pieces. We can only dream of a complete "Cube" tea set with similar embellishment!

*Note that the term "Ivory Ware" was intended by the manufacturer to describe the body color, and was not a name given to the pattern itself, though it is quite common in steamship china collectors' circles to refer to it as such.
**We have subsequently learned of a set of children's dishes manufactured by a Staffordshire potter, circa 1930, which feature a series of scenes from the "Miss Muffet" story. Though we were not able to exactly match this particular scene, the similarities between the images are striking. Considering this evidence, it is likely that additional images (if there were any) were indeed limited to Miss Muffet and no other nursery rhyme characters; therefore this pattern could indeed be referred to by that name.
