Pattern description:
This is likely the most famous Cunard pattern, known to many collectors as "Ivory
Ware*", and produced for the line by Maddock and Foley. The pattern
consists of a light grey line, a pair of orange lines, and a single black
line** applied to tan (Maddock) or cream colored (Foley) china. Combined,
these lines create a decorative band which measures ¾" to 1" in
width. In addition to the differences in body color between manufacturers,
there are also subtle variations in the design. The pair of orange lines
on examples manufactured by Foley are closer together than those on
Maddock items. Foley pieces are backstamped "Bone China" and
tend to be a lighter gauge; this is especially apparent when examining
items from the "Cube" tea service. Pattern notes: This pattern is one of the few steamship patterns which has been reproduced, however not by the original makers. Reproduction pieces will not bear the Cunard logo which appears on nearly every original item. *Though the name "Ivory Ware" is used commonly in collectors' circles to refer to this pattern, it should be noted that this is merely a trade name used by manufacturers to describe the body color. **Note that on the cup illustrated a single orange line has also been applied to the inside, just below the rim. |
