Delightful
topmarked china from the famed Hotel Multnomah, located at 4th &
Pine streets in Portland, Oregon. This edifice was built in 1912 by
entrepreneur Philip Gevurtz, and immediately made history when a
plane landed on and took off from its roof. The hotel was named for
the Multnomah Indians, part of the Chinookan tribe, which lived on
the eastern tip of what is now Sauvie Island. The china features a
geometric border design of pale blue-green and mustard, and may well
have been intended for service in the hotel's "Blue and Gold
Dining Room." The crest features the profile of a Multnomah on
a shield with crossed tomahawks and feathers - the same crest is
visible in the upholstery of furniture pictured in old postcards of
the hotel's lobby. The Multnomah operated until 1962, but has since
reopened as Portland's Embassy Suites.
