Beautiful
ware from the famed Hotel Grunewald, located near the French
Quarter, on Baronne Street in New Orleans. The Grunewald was built
in 1893 as a 6-story, 200 room hotel by Louis Grunewald. He added a
14-story, 400 room annex in 1908, and opened what is thought to have
been the country's first nightclub, "The Cave," complete
with stalactites, stalagmites, and waterfalls, and located in the
hotel's basement. Sold in 1923, the hotel was renamed "The
Roosevelt," and is currently operating as New Orleans'
"Fairmont." The china features a grey-green transfer
print of cotton bolls, leaves and flowers, and a custom crest that
reads: "The Hotel Grunewald Caterers, New Orleans." Due to
the cobalt content of the pigment used, the decoration has a lovely
"flow blue" effect. No manufacturer's mark is present.
