Magnificent
dinner ware from the acclaimed Hotel Utah, located at the heart of
Salt Lake City, just across from the southeast corner of Temple
Square. The plate illustrated was manufactured by Syracuse China,
and bears an impressed date mark indicating manufacture in 1918,
seven years after the hotel's grand opening, in June of 1911. The
crest features what appears to be a large Bald Eagle - though being
as we are familiar with Salt Lake history, this may well have been
intended to represent a seagull. The bird holds a shield bearing a
beehive, and the hotel's name appears on a large banner, below. The
rim is decorated with gold lines and a wide gold band with a Greek
key design in black. Some wear apparent to the gilt decoration, but
still excellent overall. The hotel was closed in August of 1987, but
the LDS Church, which own the property, have been considerate enough
to preserve this historic edifice and have converted it to office
space. This is a great memento from a hotel once referred to as Salt
Lake's "Classy Lady."
